Spotlight for a special broadcast - Jimmie Herrod & Cédric Hanriot: A New Foray Into Fauré

In May, All Classical Radio’s Christa Wessel hosted a special program performed by acclaimed vocalist Jimmie Herrod and celebrated pianist and composer Cédric Hanriot. A New Foray Into Fauré featured exclusive performances of works by Gabriel Fauré, as well as music by the “Dean of American Balladeers” John Jacob Niles, and composer Ned Rorem, in new arrangements by Herrod and Hanriot.

Before each piece, hear Herrod and Hanriot discuss the music and their creative process, as well as some insight into the original composers. This is a unique opportunity to experience the talents of these two extraordinary artists in an intimate setting.

JUST JIMMIE

The same week, Herrod was featured as the 28th creative profiled in All Classical Radio’s Artist Anthology, spotlighting 40 contemporary artists of the Pacific Northwest in honor of the station’s 40th anniversary. The spotlight takes viewers behind the scenes of Herrod’s artistry and career through an exclusive interview and photos.

A Sunday Brunch Recipe from PBO’s Julian Perkins https://www.allclassical.org/brunch-recipe-perkins/ Wed, 01 Nov 2023 23:50:54 +0000 https://www.allclassical.org/?p=93968 Sunday Brunch host Suzanne Nance loves to gather with friends and family around the brunch table, sharing food, music, and memories. This Sunday, November 5, she’s joined on Sunday Brunch by Portland Baroque Orchestra’s Artistic Director Julian Perkins, and Julian has a special treat he would love to share with YOU!

We are delighted to pass on Julian’s recipe for Sticky Fried Goo-Goo. Similar to Rice Krispies Treats, this dessert is an Oxford birthday celebration favorite. Bon appétit!

Download the full recipe here, and be sure to tune in to Sunday Brunch every Sunday from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM PT. There’s always room at the brunch table!

Sticky Fried Goo-Goo

Ingredients:

  • 10.5 Tbsp unsalted butter
  • 14 oz. marshmallows
  • 6.5 oz. dairy-free toffee
  • 1 Tbsp golden syrup
  • 3.5 cups Rice Krispies (you can judge it by eye)
  • 3 full-sized mars bars
  • 3 Tbsp of double cream

Line a 9x13in (or similar-sized) baking dish with plastic wrap.

In a large saucepan over a low heat, add the butter, marshmallows, toffee, and golden syrup. Gently melt everything down and mix well. When all the ingredients have melted and are evenly blended, add the rice krispies. As gently as you can so as not to crush too many rice krispies, mix everything with a large metal spoon so that the rice krispies are covered well with the marshmallow mixture. It will be very sticky! When judging how many rice krispies you will need, you do not want the finished mixture to be too runny. If so, add more. Ideally, you want the marshmallow mixture to just cover the rice krispies, not swamp them.

Tip everything into the prepared baking tray and flatten the krispies mixture out using the back of the spoon. Pop in the fridge for a good twenty minutes.

While the ‘sticky fried goo goo’ is chilling, put the mars bars and cream into a small pan and gently melt down. Take the goo goo out of the fridge and pour the melted mars bars over the top.  Put back into the fridge and leave for a good two hours to set. Cut into squares and enjoy!

Part 1: Venturing into the Unknown

Music has always been an anchor for me.

Whether I’m tickling the keys of the piano, bowing or plucking my cello, or listening to recorded tracks or live performances, music serves as a constant; a place of refuge, comfort, joy, emotion, and trusted companionship.

My connection to music is especially important when life takes turns toward the unexpected—and it certainly did when I took a monumental leap into the unknown, and relocated to Tel Aviv, Israel in December 2021!

From left: Sophie Lippert, Stephanie Schneiderman, Marina Albero, and Amenta Abioto share the stage at The Old Church during Connections Concerts’ September 2019 show.

This transition was a big surprise to everyone in my life—including me. For the previous 10 years, I’d established a life in Portland as a performing pianist, teacher, and entrepreneur. I’d played as a concerto soloist with the Seattle Philharmonic and Olympia Symphony, performed at venues such as the Keller Auditorium and the Portland Art Museum, and collaborated with many of the Pacific Northwest’s finest multi-genre musicians as founder of Connections Concert Series. I’d recorded my first full-length solo piano CD, worked as resident recording artist with Classic Pianos, and played several thrilling Thursdays @ Three programs right here on All Classical Portland.
